Oral cancer remains the 6th deadliest cancer, with 35,000 cases discovered yearly in the United States alone, and only half of those patients surviving 5 years post-diagnosis. The high death rates for oral cancer are contributed to the fact patients do not generally detect signs or symptoms until it has advanced and further metastasizes. Dr Bhaskar and his family traveled with the group International Health Emissaries to Guatemala this Christmas to provide dental care to the people of the Rio Dulce region of eastern Guatemala. They left Christmas day with Dr Bayless and his family, returning on January 2nd 2012. Drs Bhaskar and Bayless were joined by Dr Abramsky from New York and Dr Patel from Cleveland. The team traveled 6 hours by bus after landing in Guatemala city and then 30 minutes by boat to Rio Dulce. The trip was a great success and provided dental care to over 200 children and adults who otherwise have no access to dentistry. After 4 days of work, the group traveled west to visit the town of Antigua, that was founded in 1524 as the capital of colonial Guatemala and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
